From the Desk of Linda Smith, Founder of Reading Village
Our 12-year adventure at Reading Village has been full of pride, joy, accomplishment, and challenges overcome. Today we announce the first steps in the next leg of our journey.
Our Leaders and Readers Program has established a strong record of success, reaching over 12,000 children with reading and literacy activities, and transforming the lives of more than 150 students who have been part of the program.
However, unforeseen institutional barriers have led our Board of Directors to make the difficult decision to dissolve Reading Village.
In order to best fulfill our commitment to the youth currently enrolled in our program, the core of our mission will now be to see these 67 teen participants through to their high school graduation.
To facilitate this new mission, we have ended leadership trainings and literacy activities, and the majority of our paid staff will be released at the end of the year.
Thanks to your support over the years, we’ve worked diligently with our incredible staff, both in Guatemala and in the U.S., to create amazing opportunities for teens and children in the Mayan Highlands of Guatemala: opportunities to grow their literacy skills and graduate high school; to develop leadership skills, and empathy; to improve their feelings of pride and self-worth through service to community; and, for securing professional employment.
Please join us in celebrating the bold, brilliant students who have touched all of our lives over the years, and whose triumphant stories will remain in our hearts forever.
These young people still need your help.
In order to meet our obligations to our remaining teens we will be conducting one final fundraising campaign, launching in a few weeks on Giving Tuesday. We hope you’ll help us ensure that while Reading Village is closing, our impact will continue for generations.
On behalf of everyone at Reading Village, the Board of Directors, our staff and all the youth in our program over the years: Thank you from the deepest place in our hearts!
