Today was a real adventure! We walked through Panajachel to the shores of Lake Atitlan where we boarded a “lancha” (water taxi) to travel all the way across the lake to the artist cooperative town of San Juan. We were joined by several Reading Village Youth Leaders – many of whom had never traveled across the lake despite it being so close to their hometowns.
In San Juan we toured an organic coffee cooperative, visited a model community library program, and enjoyed browsing the local galleries and weaving cooperatives. Today was a chance to explore the culture of this region, to see the cooperative culture that is stimulating economic development in these communities, and to experience the larger context in which Reading Village works. Of course we also indulged in fresh coffee and sweet ice cream along the way!
