There is only one public library in Quetzaltenango, the second largest city in the country. It is a large space that is poorly utilized. Whats more the walls are stark, the seats are empty, signs demanding silence are posted everywhere, and the books are all locked up in cages — really. This is what your typical library looks like in Guatemala — very different from the libraries weve been visiting. We joked that there is more color and life in local cemetaries (with their above ground crypts that are painted blue, yellow and pink and surrounded by colorful flowers)!
