Juana Estela is Defying the Odds

Founder and Executive Director, Linda Smith, speaks with recent program and high school graduate, Juana Estela, who spent four years promoting literacy among hundreds of children in her community.

Across Guatemala there are two million youth who cannot afford to be in school. We believe that is two million too many. Thanks to you, Juana Estela will never be part of this statistic.

Juana Estela’s older brother attended high school, but when it came time for straight-A-student Juana to begin her high school education, her family landed on hard times and had no funds to send Juana to school. Adding insult to injury Juana’s parents decided that, as a female, she shouldn’t continue studying. But when she was accepted into Reading Village’s Leaders and Readers program which provided a full-ride scholarship to high school, her parents conceded. Reading Village staff consider Juana Estela one of the “super promoters” for her great skill in engaging children with her reading activities. We are proud to announce that Juana Estela graduated from high school in November and she plans to study business administration at university. You helped make this possible!

This holiday season give the gift of literacy and education and join our Two Million Too Many matching campaign to prepare more youth like Juana Estela to defy the odds.  Every single donation we receive will be doubled and will prepare more youth like Juana for success against the odds. We cannot thank you enough for your partnership in this good work.
