Julio is one of our “pioneers,” one of the six brave teens who formed our first group of scholars in Concepcion. But even so, he was quite timid when it came to answering questions or offering ideas in the group. Once he started reading to children, and they called his name out from across the onion field, “Julio, Julio, read me a story!” Julio began to see himself in a new light. He began to see himself as an agent of change in his community. He was a key participant in the group of teens that opened the very first library in Concepcion, and he is now a teaching fellow at the innovative Asturias Academy, where he will spend three years learning their teaching methodology and how to run such a school, with the intent of returning to Concepcion to open a school in his own community.
