GLOBAL LITERACY STORY-A-THON

In the world today, one billion adults cannot read. Those same adults may never be paid a living wage, and will struggle to support their families. Reading Village, 100 Book Day, and Boulder Book Store believe that reading starts with children. By reading stories together, kids’ imaginations run wild and they grow up with the skills needed to chase the dreams that were sparked as children. For a few hours this fall, local celebrities will share their passion for books with children of all ages, and Clementine Studios will host a bookmark making table. The event is free to the public. Donations to Reading Village are encouraged.

This year’s celebrity readers include:

Jeff and Merry Beth Evans: World-renowned climber, adventurer, and author Jeff Evans has established himself as one of the country’s most respected mountaineering guides and has now become one of the most sought after adventure-based motivational speakers as well. Jeff’s wife, Merry Beth, is the vice president of their organization Mountain Vision, which provides speaking events and international trekking adventures (www.mountain-vision.com).

Jeff Kagan and Paige Doughty: Jeff Kagan has been entertaining and educating children and parents with his original, environmental music for over a decade. Paige is an award winning environmental educator, sustainability champion, writer, dancer, and lover of the natural world. Together, Paige and Jeff are educating and inspiring youth with environmental music that gets everyone dancing! (www.jeffandpaige.org).

Congressman Jared Polis: Jared Polis is an entrepreneur, philanthropist, and the U.S. Representative for Colorado’s 2nd Congressional district, serving since 2009. Congressman Polis believes that education is the single most meaningful investment that we can make in the future.

Mark Megibow: Mark Megibow provides the heart-pounding beats for Face vocal band. Unlike many beat-box artists, he has a background in instrumental percussion, and has been playing real drums since the third grade. Mark has performed with ensembles ranging from symphony orchestras, to marching bands, loud obnoxious rock bands, and now Face (www.facevocalband.com).

The event is totally free to the public, and we’ll have door prizes and crafts tables for the kids.
