We spent two long days with folks from Intervida a large Spanish non-profit working in the western part of the country. We took long trips on unpaved, rocky, bumpy, dusty roads into small towns where Intervida has worked with local cities and citizens committees to build and run libraries. They are doing wonderful work and it is becoming clearer that there are at least three solid organizations building libraries and that probably is not the work that my foundation needs to be doing. So we are looking at other ways to help. I found this boy searching the shelves and asked him what he was looking for. I did not understand what he said and asked him to repeat it, and he put his sweet little face right up in mine and said very clearly (in Spanish of course) A Thousand and One Nights. It is so great to see a kid absorbed in a good story.
